Major Feature: Journeys into Space:
The environment as a new medium for graphic design

Every day we are confronted with millions of synthetically generated symbols, artifacts, buildings or superstructures that are gradually chipping away at our organic surroundings. Technology rules; marketing hype is our new muse. Artificiality continues to outstrip the authentic to the point where the very fabric of the Earth we inhabit is under threat. Is there any way out?

In this issue of IdN we examine the possibilities of a "counter-revolution" by "designers with a conscience". These include Mark Jenkins, Maxalot, Kahori Maki, Fons Schiedon, loop.ph and others. The feature provides an insight into the intrinsic values of some of our most eminent ambience designers.

Russia: Casting off the Shackles of Socialist Realism
In this column, we take a closer look at a more alternative and off-beat form of art gallery in Paris - where art works are exhibited in more neighborly venues like restaurants, cafes or shopping malls. This enables people to appreciate art while having a cup of tea or shopping instead of having to make a specific visit somewhere to do so, and thus helps make art a more integral part of daily living.

Typography: Daring to be Different
As we seem to be living in a world where consistency has replaced creativity, now is the time for designers and typographers who doesn't subscribe to the notion of a house style to begin to shine. The people featured in this article do not fit into a box of any shape; their work seems to react against tradition and breaks any code of consistency - unless it is to be consistently original.
